David M. Katzen is a Principal of Katzen Marshall. David earned his Bachelor of Science in Commerce with a concentration in Finance from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He completed the requirements to qualify as a Chartered Accountant in England and Wales and is an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) in the Business Valuation discipline with the American Society of Appraisers.
Since entering the business valuation industry in 1981, Mr. Katzen has led more than 3,000 valuations of securities, business enterprises, real estate, machinery and equipment, and intangible assets. Prior to forming Katzen Marshall, Mr. Katzen was a Partner in Ernst & Young’s Valuation Services Group. He was responsible for field investigations, analysis, and report preparation of valuation studies. Before joining Ernst & Young, Mr. Katzen was a senior investigations accountant with the London-based office of Laventhol & Horwath. Mr. Katzen also brings five years experience in audit and tax.
His work covers purposes such as purchase price allocation for tax and financial reporting, estate and gift tax planning, mergers and acquisitions, shareholder disputes, arbitration, transfer pricing, ESOPs, regulatory reporting, management planning, property tax appeals, and divorce matters. He has provided expert testimony in litigation, including dissenting shareholder suits, divorce, lost profit cases, and bankruptcy proceedings, with appearances in courts across Texas, Arizona, and Oklahoma.
His industry experience spans agribusiness, energy, automotive, financial institutions, telecommunications, manufacturing, construction, publishing, retail, high tech, software, healthcare, and various niche sectors, and his valuation work has extended internationally to the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Italy, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Mexico.
Outside the office, Mr. Katzen enjoys quality time with his wife, their three children, and grandchildren. He also remains actively involved in professional organizations such as the American Society of Appraisers, Institute of Chartered Accountants, ESOP Association, and the Dallas Estate Planning Council.
